Copywriting Examples: Social Media

The average person spends over two hours on social media per day.

Looking at pictures isn't the only thing we do as we mindlessly scroll. We're reading what other people write.

If we're the ones sharing, we are using our copywriting knowledge without even knowing it.

Learning copywriting skills is vital to killing the social media game. Copywriting that converts is the best strategy to have for digital marketing.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about social media copywriting!

What Makes Good Copywriting?

Copywriting is not as simple as writing a short blurb to get a point across. You need to know who you're speaking to, what you want to achieve, and how to get your audience to do what you want.

  • Do you want them to order your newest product?
  • Do you want them to sign up for your services?
  • Are you motivating them to get out there and do something?

Whatever your end goal, you have to write with that in mind.

Know Your Audience

First things first. Get to know your audience.
  • Where do they live?
  • How old are they? What do they do as their hobbies?
  • Are you speaking to men or women?
  • Teachers or CEOs?

Once you know who you are targeting, you can tweak your copywriting to match their desires, thoughts, and daily lives.

Form a Relationship with Your Audience

Once you know your audience and who you are writing towards, it is time to start forming relationships.

When you are writing social media copywriting, you should consider the following:
  • Ask a question your audience will say "yes" to
  • Call them out by occupation
  • Use numbers and statistics
  • Show your social proof
  • Evoke emotions by telling a story or asking questions

Using these tactics in your social media copywriting will give you the best results for your digital marketing campaigns.

Whether you choose to evoke emotions or ask a question, as long as you do it right, you'll sell your products or services.

Know Your Goal

Most companies are not mindlessly writing social media captions. There is a process behind them to reach a specific goal.

Knowing what you are posting for or why you are posting, in general, will help your social marketing strategy.

Whatever goal you have in mind, your copywriting should grow the following:
  • Grow the brand
  • Increase the number of followers
  • Increase clicks and shares by users
  • Create conversions
  • Encourage engagement with comments

If your goal is to have your audience buy a new product, you want clicks. If your goal is to increase your following to grow the business as a whole, think of the copywriting that will achieve this.

Telling your audience they should follow you won't do the trick. Telling them why will.

Include a Call to Action

Copywriting without a call to action is pointless.
What do you want your audience to do?

Stare at the picture? No.

Tell them what to do!

Below are a few examples of different call to actions on your posts:
  • Check out our blog for more tips on digital marketing!
  • Ready for summer? Go grab one of our swimsuits before they sell out.
  • Our new course is coming. You won't want to miss this.
  •
Depending on what your goal is, your call to action needs to match. Getting your audience to do what you want is one of the most important parts of copywriting.

What Copywriting Examples Should I Follow?

If you're trying to level up your copywriting game, looking through these examples will give you a good head start.

Once you have stronger social media content, you will start to see your digital marketing paying off.

Pop-Tarts

Pop-Tarts is a great example of a brand that knows how to get its copywriting right.

Whether the brand is seen having debates with its audience members or writing short and witty commentary, they've nailed the social media copywriting.

On Twitter, we've seen:
  • Funny public service announcements
  • Asking their audience how to heat a Pop-Tart correctly

Their ability to capture their audience's attention right away allows their social media copywriting to convert. This conversion is the key to digital marketing.

Under Armour

Under Armour speaks to its audience. They know that their audience is people who are athletes that are willing to work through anything - rain or shine, excruciating heat, or the blistering cold.

They find pictures that illustrate this dedication. They then add copywriting to the image that works well with it.

It's a call to action that speaks directly to their audience who are dedicated to their craft.

Their Instagram is full of pictures and posts that represent their brand - motivation and inspiration to do the thing, and what you should be wearing while you do it.

Fenty Beauty

There's nothing that speaks to an audience better than inclusivity, especially in 2021.

Since Fenty Beauty hit the scene in 2017, they've been speaking to a broad range of people. Different skin tones, genders, and looks - it doesn't matter.

No one is left out. You're included here.

Fenty Beauty's copywriting works because it speaks to the people they are targeting directly.

Depending on the product, it walks you through who you should be if you want to use it, how to use it, and why you should be using it.

National Geographic

National Geographic is the number one brand on social media, and for good reason.

Although they aren't trying to sell a product, they engage their audience through every single post on social media.

A picture of a woman picking blueberries? The copywriting will explain exactly who and where the picture is taken, and why we should care about it.

A photo of multiple people in knee-deep snow? The copywriting dives deep into the science behind snow and gives us a brief synopsis of it. And again, the copywriting explains why we should care.

National Geographic speaks to its audience through storytelling and the evoking of our deepest emotions.

As an audience, we're sucked into the stories of the places and people we're introduced to in the photos and left wanting to learn more.

Go Pro

Go Pro takes copywriting to another level by using user-generated content and then explaining what it is.

By using their very own customers' content, Go Pro gains trust with their audience members to convince them to buy their products.

It then creates social pull to attract more customers.
With each social media post, there is a call to action based on the product seen in the photo.

Air BnB

Air BnB is thriving all on social media channels—and for good reason.

The company engages with its audience through different social media channels by using polls, asking their audience questions, and posting short and witty content.

All of the copywriting exists with beautiful photos of the different homes, which immediately captures your attention.

Bumble

Bumble's social media channels are doing something right. They immediately capture their audience's attention, which turns into the app downloads they want.

They engage their audience through GIFs and partnerships to keep customers coming back to their app.

They also make sure you know that the choice is yours whether you're alone eating pizza or out meeting someone who could be the love of your life.

If making you regret your life choices of too many episodes of Grey's Anatomy is their way of copywriting, it works for their customers!
