Copy is Everywhere
When you tell someone you’re a copywriter, they’ll often say: I didn’t know you worked in the law. Or they’ll start telling you about their brother who’s a patent attorney. Then when you explain what you do, they still look at you with an eyebrow raised – huh? Funny, isn’t it?
Because copy is everywhere. It’s probably the single biggest part of our everyday experience and yet people are at a loss to define it. Think for a moment of picking up your daily newspaper. Well, the articles are all copy and the ads are all advertising copy.
Every brochure, every business letter you get in the mail, every website you visit, all made up of copy that someone, somewhere, wrote. You listen to someone give a speech or a talk – all written beforehand – by that person or someone else.
Copy is everywhere and hence the need for copywriters is great. And still, it’s a profession people don’t understand. Well, that’s great news for you if you’d like to break into the field. It’s a lucrative profession that doesn’t require an expensive graduate degree. It’s flexible and creative and good copywriters are in demand.
Start paying attention as you go through your day. You sit down in the dentists’ office and see a rack of brochures on every dental problem known to humankind. Each one of those was researched and written by a copywriter.
Take the bus cross town and pass the time reading ads – all written by a copywriter somewhere. Open your mailbox and pull out a promotion for a seminar coming soon to your city. More copy. The magazine you get from your alumni association, the giveaway from your health insurance company, the manual that came with the new car you just bought. You see, the list goes on and on.
Everything you read – online and off had to be created in order to be presented in a final format – copy is indeed everywhere. And, good copywriters are needed to write it all. If you have an expertise in any field – be it a profession or a hobby, you can translate that knowledge and write about it, for yourself or for clients.
It’s a written world out there, no matter how it’s ‘served’ online, through videos, audios, offline in letters, brochures, white papers, special reports, newsletters, emails – all of it needs to be written.
